Caution
-
As a result of its investigation of a formal complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. David Craig as follows: • He indicated that he has limited his practice to dentoalveolar surgery and intravenous sedation and that he provides dental treatment in numerous offices. He must complete his own evaluation of each patient, including making his own diagnosis, assessing the patient's suitability for treatment, and developing a treatment plan. He cannot proceed with treatment based on the assessment of another dentist. • He must maintain open, bilateral communication with his patients. If a patient indicates to him that he or she previously received an opinion that differed from his own, particularly from a specialist, it is incumbent upon him to listen to the patient, make follow-up inquiries if appropriate, and deliberate upon the information available. Once he has done so and formed an opinion, he must explain the options for treatment to the patient, including the option he recommends and the option of referral to a specialist. • When the treatment he provides results in a seriously adverse outcome, he should reconsider the fees he intends to charge for the treatment. • If a seriously adverse outcome occurs in a surgical case, it is in the best interests of the patient for him to actively facilitate follow-up care. He may wish to consider and weigh such options as locating a nearby oral surgeon who can see the patient right away, calling a nearby hospital and/or oral surgeon on call at a nearby hospital to alert them to his patient's needs, arranging ambulance transportation, and/or attending at the hospital or specialist's office with the patient.

Caution
-
As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. David Vernon Craig as follows: • Your regulatory history with the College suggests that you have not made meaningful and lasting improvements to your practice. It appears that you have not fully integrated the lessons learned from the Committee’s remedial outcomes – including courses and practice monitoring – and this has resulted in the recurrence of similar issues before the College. The Committee expresses its firm expectation that you apply the lessons learned from this matter to make meaningful and sustained improvements to your practice, and that you apply these improvements broadly to your practice. The Committee may consider a referral to the Discipline Committee if similar concerns arise in the future.
